The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is undertaking audits of entities exporting regulated waste material to ensure they are complying with legislation to prevent materials from being dumped overseas.
Waste export restrictions on materials such as tyres, glass and plastics under the Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020 contribute to the Australian Government’s commitment to better protect the environment.
Audits play an important role in maintaining the integrity of Australia’s export system and provide an opportunity for the commercial sector to better understand their obligations.
Under legislation, all approved exporters of regulated waste must retain records for every export for at least 5 years.
Audits are being undertaken from March 2023, with those selected for auditing to be notified in advance.
The first audit will focus on record-keeping obligations.
Those concerned that they may have breached their record-keeping obligations for exporting regulated waste materials are asked to contact the Department on 1800 852 974 or email complianceexportwaste@dcceew.gov.au
