Projecting Australia’s emissions: 2021 report

  • Climate change
26 October 2021

Australia remains on track to meet and beat its 2030 Paris target according to new data released today.

The Australia’s Emissions Projections 2021 report shows that we are expected to beat our 2030 emissions reduction target of 26% to 28% below 2005 levels. Australia is projected to reduce emissions by 30% compared to 2005.

The report also estimates Australia’s 2030 emissions under a ‘high-technology’ scenario. This scenario assumes:

  • we achieve the technology stretch goals of the Low Emissions Technology Statement 2021
  • increased use of other low emissions technologies.

In this case Australia is expected to reduce emissions by 35% compared to 2005.

We prepared the 2021 emissions projections in line with international guidelines adopted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Reporting Australia's emissions projections fulfils one of Australia's reporting requirements under the UNFCCC.
