Industry trials will help Australia shape the final design of a Guarantee of Origin scheme for hydrogen.
This scheme will support future trade in clean hydrogen by informing customers about the emissions associated with the hydrogen they buy. The energy source and type of technology used to manufacture the hydrogen will also be provided.
To ensure the final scheme is fit for purpose, we are working with the Clean Energy Regulator to hold trials over the next 18 months.
Companies with operating or well-advanced pilot projects for hydrogen will be invited to take part in the trials. They will test the practical application of methodologies for carbon emissions from hydrogen and biomass production pathways.
An industry trials reference group will also support the design of the final scheme.
The trials build on the results of a discussion paper released in 2021, as well as work through the International Partnership on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE).
The 2021–22 Budget provided $9.7 million for the trials, with the Australian Government now investing more than $1.2 billion to accelerate the development of an Australian hydrogen industry.
