This methodology determination (method) provides the rules for crediting emission reductions achieved by capturing biogas generated from wastewater treatment under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme.
The method credits the capture and combustion of biogas avoiding emitting of methane into the atmosphere. It also credits converting captured biogas into biomethane for use as a natural gas substitute within Australia.
Using the method
To use this method and participate in the ACCU Scheme, you need to apply to the Clean Energy Regulator. The Regulator manages project registration, compliance and crediting of emissions reductions for projects under the ACCU Scheme.
Visit the Regulator’s website for:
- information on the method and how to use it
- project planning guidance, including eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Consultation on the method
Read the Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee’s (ERAC’s) advice to the Minister on making the method in 2015 (PDF 1.06 MB).
See the public consultation and variation draft on our Have your Say portal.
A minor variation to the method was made in 2015. ERAC advice is not required for minor variations.
