Australia’s National Greenhouse Accounts are made up of a series of comprehensive reports and databases that estimate, and account for, Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. These publications fulfil Australia’s international and domestic inventory reporting requirements. The Quarterly Update of Australia’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory reports on the latest estimates of Australia’s national greenhouse gas inventory.

Key data

Australia's annual emissions for the year to March 2015 (excluding emissions from land use, land use change and forestry) are estimated to be 533.9 Mt CO₂-e.

National emissions levels decreased by 0.4 per cent in trend terms for the March quarter 2015.
Emissions for the March 2014 quarter decreased 0.5 per cent relative to the previous quarter on a seasonally adjusted and weather normalised basis.
Annual emissions for the year to March 2015 (excluding the land sector) decreased 0.2 per cent compared to the year to March 2014.

Over the year to March 2015, the decrease in emissions was largely caused by a decline in the agriculture sector, reflecting lower cattle numbers. Emissions from industrial processes and product use and fugitive emissions from fossil fuel extraction and production also decreased. These declines in emissions were partially offset by increases in electricity, reflecting changes in the generation mix, and emissions from transport and stationary energy excluding electricity.
