About this permit
The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Regulations 2000 (EPBC Regulations) requires a permit for activities which may cause death, injure, take, trade, keep or move a member of a protected species and/or damage or destroy a nest or dwelling place of a member of a protected species.
Protected species include:
- species not listed as threatened, migratory or marine under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999;
- mentioned in Schedule 12 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Regulations 2000 (EPBC Regulations); and
- in, or taken from, Territories of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island and Coral Sea Islands.
Protected species include:
- all mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians;
- some species of crabs and shrimps; and
- all species that occur in certain habitats on Christmas Island or certain areas in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Territory, among others.
See a full list of protected species in Schedule 12 of the EPBC Regulations.
If you intend to conduct an activity affecting a protected species in these Commonwealth Territories (outside any Commonwealth parks or reserves within those territories) you will require a permit.
Permits will only be issued by the Environment Minister if there are reasonable grounds for believing that the action will not, or is not likely to, adversely affect the conservation status of a protected species or a population of a protected species.
