About the report
In 2017 the Department commissioned Birdlife Australia to prepare a report to provide a stocktake of past and ongoing Orange-bellied Parrot conservation activities to identify gaps and explore alternative recovery models.
The report was commissioned with the intent to be used as an additional resource for the Australian Government, the Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Team and other stakeholders when considering future recovery actions and investment. The report does not supersede or replace the current National Recovery Plan for the Orange-bellied Parrot.
Recovery of a critically endangered multi-jurisdictional species with a complex and migratory life cycle such as the Orange-bellied Parrot is enormously challenging and there remain gaps in our knowledge of the species’ ecology and threat management. With a long history of recovery activity and a large number of active stakeholders, varying perspectives on past and current activities and outcomes are to be anticipated.
This report provides a review of past management actions up to and including the 2017-18 breeding season. Since the report was commissioned in 2017, the Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Team and other stakeholders have progressed many of the recovery actions subsequently recommended in the report. Further information about the preparation of the report is available.
The Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Team continues to play an important role in the recovery of this species, through coordination, collaboration and the provision of technical advice. The Department is a member of the Recovery Team and the Australian Government continues to support on-ground actions to reverse the species’ decline and address knowledge gaps.
