The draft National Recovery Plan for the Black-breasted Button-quail (Turnix melanogaster) was prepared by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment and is proposed to be made as the national recovery plan for this species under the EPBC Act.
The Black-breasted Button-quail occurs in south‐eastern Queensland from near Byfield in the north to the Border Ranges in the south and as far west as Palmgrove National Park and Barakula State Forest. The species is listed in the Vulnerable category under the EPBC Act. Habitat loss due to agriculture, forestry and domestic stock grazing are recognised as the main processes that has reduced the distribution and abundance of the Black-breasted Button-quail in the last 75 years. Other threats include invasive weeds, climate change, wildfire, urbanisation and feral predators.
The draft national recovery plan provides information on distribution, habitat, threatening processes, and presents the actions considered necessary to recover this species.
