In 2014, the Australian and Australian Capital Territory (ACT) governments agreed to a strategic assessment to support economic and growth and development in the Eastern Broadacre area of the ACT. Strategic assessments let us consider impacts to protected matters on a broad scale. Projects or activities covered by an approved strategic assessment do not need individual approval.
Strategic assessments are a collaboration between the Australian Government and an assessment partner. This collaboration allows for a big-picture approach to safeguarding protected matters from the impacts of development over a long time.
The Eastern Broadacre (ACT) strategic assessment on this page is being progressed. This means the Environment minister signed an agreement with a partner to undertake a strategic assessment. The partner is now working to develop the required information.
Overview
The Eastern Broadacre covers the eastern edge of the ACT. It runs from the Majura Valley in the north to Hume in the south and includes Symonston and the Jerrabomberra Valley. The ACT Government has earmarked it as an area for economic growth and development.
The strategic assessment will include:
- planned conservation areas
- corridors for biodiversity protection
- urban amenity.
