Improving how we operate under the EPBC Act

We administer the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Protecting our unique environment is at the centre of what we do. We're making our services easier for everyone to access so that together, we'll make better environmental decisions.

Digital Environment Assessments Program

The Digital Environmental Assessments Program (DEAP) is an Australian Government initiative. Its aim is to digitally transform environmental assessment and approval processes by enabling more:

  • transparent decision-making
  • streamlined processes
  • integrated systems.

These improvements will help us to make more robust decisions and create better regulatory outcomes.

To co-design and pilot DEAP systems and tools, we're partnering with the Western Australian Government.

Underpinning the planning and work for DEAP are the:

  • Deregulation Agenda
  • Digital Government Strategy
  • Independent Reviews of the EPBC Act.

Portal and Assessment System (PAS) project

As part of DEAP, we're improving the way we process environmental assessments under the EPBC Act.

The Portal and Assessment System (PAS) project involves building:

  • a new referral form
  • two new online portals.

Together, these improvements will simplify the referral, assessment and public comments processes. The new form and portals will be available in early 2022.

Read more about the redesigned portals and referral form.

Biodiversity Data Repository (BDR) project

As part of DEAP, we're also improving the way we manage Australia’s biodiversity data.

In the Biodiversity Data Repository (BDR) project, we’re working with the WA Government to pilot data sharing. The pilot repository will be available for public use by late 2022.

Read more about the Biodiversity Data Repository.
