CAPAD (Collaborative Australian Protected Area Database) contains information on all protected areas in Australia, including their IUCN management categories.

The current version of CAPAD is CAPAD 2014. The data below has been superceded, but is still available for historic purposes.

CAPAD 2002 report

The CAPAD 2002 report provides information and summary statistics on 'protected areas' of land and marine areas dedicated to nature conservation within Australia, oceanic islands such as Lord Howe Island administered by the states or Commonwealth and Australia's external territories.

This publication provides details of protected areas that are contained within the 2002 version of CAPAD.

Summary data (2002)

The terrestrial summary data for each area includes, where relevant:

  • Summary of Terrestrial Protected Areas by Type- (Number and Area[hectares])
  • Terrestrial Protected Areas by IUCN Management Category
  • Terrestrial Protected Areas by Bioregion (IBRA 5.1)
  • Protected Areas by IUCN Management Category in each Bioregion (IBRA 5.1)
  • Listing of all Protected Areas - includes information on Name, Type, IUCN Category, Area (hectares), Gazettal Date, Location (Latitude and Longitude) and IBRA 5.1 region protected areas is located

The marine & external territory summary data for each area includes, where relevant:

  • Summary of Marine, Oceanic Island and External Territory Protected Areas by Type- (Number and Areahectares])
  • Marine, Oceanic Island and External territory Protected Areas by IUCN Management Category
  • Listing of Marine and Oceanic Island Protected Areas - includes information on Name, Type, IUCN Category, Area (hectares), Gazettal Date, Location (Latitude and Longitude)
