About this document
Hazardous Waste in Australia 2017 provides information about hazardous and controlled wastes produced and managed across the Australian economy. The report brings together available state and territory data (mostly from waste tracking systems) and, where gaps exist, it draws on other publicly available information to form a national snapshot of hazardous wastes across their generation, management and disposal cycle. The report can be used by governments, industry and academia to inform policy and investment decisions, including identifying areas for further investigation.
Different waste streams present different challenges. The report identifies trends and potential emerging issues across various waste streams. It does not provide a risk assessment or management recommendations about specific waste streams. The volume or mass of a waste does not indicate its risk to human health or the environment. There are data limitations which prevent the report from providing clear quantities for some waste streams. The report makes recommendations for improving data and information and areas that require further study.
