The aim of the report was to: provide projections of hazardous waste arising over a 20 year timeframe; estimate the capacity of current hazardous waste infrastructure available in Australia to manage hazardous waste ‘groups’; and identify potential future shortfalls in hazardous waste infrastructure.
The key findings of this report include:
- Australia produces approximately 6 million tonnes of hazardous waste a year (more than 10 per cent of national waste generation)
- Overall, it is likely that Australia does not have a shortage of hazardous waste infrastructure, across the next 20 years. However, there are some hazardous waste types where infrastructure is or will be insufficient (lithium-ion batteries, contaminated biosolids, mercury, coal seam gas wastes, spent pot linings and asbestos).
