About the document
In 2020, the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment and Green Industries South Australia (GISA) partnered with the Australian Organics Recycling Association (AORA) to review the volume of organic waste processed by the Australian organics recycling industry.
The report assessed the existing processing capacity of the organic recycling industry as well as the industry’s capability to process organic waste under a national organics recycling rate of 70 per cent, 80 per cent, 90 per cent and 95 per cent.
The report found that if 80 per cent of organic waste was recycled, the organic waste industry would add $401 million to the Australian economy, generate an extra 2,682 jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over two million tonnes per year (equivalent to planting over three million trees) compared to business as usual.
