About the report
The report Beneficial reuse and resource recovery of waste materials: inventory of Commonwealth and state and territory guiding principles looks at the principles embedded in legislation and policy that promote waste recovery and reuse, and identifies the similarities and differences.
The report will help readers:
- understand that there are some common principles used in all jurisdictions that guide the promotion of waste recovery and reuse, such as the waste hierarchy and ecological sustainable development, but that there are a number of different principles also utilised, and
- assist to identify what, if any, principles could be used to build a definition of when a material ceases to be a waste and could be used as a resource.
This report contributes to Strategy 4 of the National Waste Policy: Less waste, more resources which aims to introduce a national definition and classification system for wastes. The report was commissioned by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.
