The Australian Government is supporting the Australian Fashion Council to establish an industry-led stewardship scheme for clothing textiles.
The problem
About 800,000 tonnes of textile waste goes to landfill each year. This waste takes hundreds of years to break down and, like other forms of waste, releases harmful carbon emissions as it breaks down in landfill.
The solution
The Australian Fashion Council will lead a consortium including brands, manufacturers, retailers, reuse charities, fibre producers, academics and waste management companies to create Australia’s first National Product Stewardship Scheme for clothing textiles. This world class initiative aims to improve the design, recovery, reuse and recycling of textiles, providing a roadmap to 2030 for clothing circularity in Australia in line with National Waste Policy Action Plan targets.
The Australian Government is providing a grant of $1,000,000 through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
The project will be completed by March 2023.
