The Australian Government is supporting Closed Loop Environmental Solutions Pty Ltd to expand and enhance the Simply Cups coffee, cup recycling, program.
The problem
It is estimated that over 1 billion take-away coffee cups end up in landfill in Australia every year. The plastic lining on the inside of cups prevents them from being recycled through normal processes.
The solution
In the 4 years that Simply Cups has been operating in Australia, it has diverted over 16 million coffee cups from landfill. There are over 1,000 Simply Cups collection sites, with cups recycled and turned into a range of industrial and consumer products.
This project is expanding the collection network to all states and territories. The project is also undertaking research to maximise the useability of materials recovered from used coffee cups. The Australian Government is providing a grant of $697,200 to support the project through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
The expansion of the Simply Cups coffee cup recycling program commenced in early 2021.
