About this report
The Australian Government Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities commissioned consultants C3 Business Solutions to report on the Department of Health and Ageing's data governance system, which manages the collection of data from jurisdictions in a consistent and standardised format.
This report is one in a series commissioned to assist the Australian, state and territory governments to develop options for a system that would provide access to national data on waste and resource recovery. It supports work under the National Waste Policy: Less Waste, More Resources, specifically the Strategy 16 activities which include the development of a system that provides integrated national core data on waste and resource recovery that is accurate, meaningful, up-to-date and available online.
Key elements of the health and ageing data system include:
- High level committee structures with states and territories on data reporting
- A national Health Information Agreement with Commonwealth agencies, states and territories to set out activities, roles and responsibilities
- National minimum data sets, data standards, data specifications and data dictionary align with and support the national agreement.
Key benefits of the system include more information available for data requests, more timely responses to those requests, improved data quality and increased business confidence in the data.
