The Australian Government is supporting the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association Limited (AMTA) to expand its MobileMuster e-waste recycling program.
The problem
It is estimated that over 250,000 tonnes of e-waste is disposed of in landfill every year. This can leach dangerous metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury into the surrounding environment and waste valuable materials.
The solution
MobileMuster is the product stewardship scheme of the mobile phone industry. It supports end of life mobile phones being recycled to the highest environmental standards. This grant is funding AMTA to consider how to expand their program to include other electronic waste such as: modems and routers, digital set-top boxes, landline phones, wearables and smart home devices.
The Australian Government is providing a grant of $373,200 for the project through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
This product stewardship investigation launched in February 2021.
