About the report
The department commissioned the Recycled Organics Unit (ROU) to collate national and jurisdictional organics recycling data for 2010-11, including the composition of organic material and the types of recycled products sold.
Organics Recycling in Australia Industry Statistics 2011 is a key data input into the National Waste Report 2013, a key deliverable under strategy 16 of the National Waste Policy: Less waste, more resources. National Waste Report details current and future trend in waste and resource recovery.
Organics Recycling in Australia Industry Statistics 2011 presents organics recycling data from the major jurisdictions (with the exception of the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania). The report found that in all states the rate of increase in the recovery of biodegradable organic materials that are diverted from urban waste streams has accelerated substantially over the past decade. In 2010-11, the total reported quantity of biodegradable organic materials received for reprocessing or land application in Australia is 6,330,749 tonnes. This data is reported from 198 licensed organics reprocessing facilities across all mainland states of Australia.
