The Australian Government is supporting the Australian Food and Grocery Council Limited (AFGC) to recover more plastics from the food and grocery supply chain.
The problem
There is currently no comprehensive, national program for the recycling of soft plastics. It is estimated that more than 1 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste is generated every year, with over 820,000 tonnes going to landfill.
The solution
This project is delivering a National Plastics Recycling Scheme to enhance recycling of plastic packaging as well as increase the use of recycled content. The scheme aims to increase the recovery of plastics to 70% by 2025, which will result in an additional 573,900 tonnes being recovered every year.
The Australian Government is providing a grant of $985,866 for the project through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
This product stewardship project commenced in January 2021.
