The Australian Government is supporting Essity to develop an industry-led product stewardship scheme for used absorbent hygiene products.
The problem
An estimated 148,000 tonnes of used absorbent hygiene products (AHPs) goes to landfill every year. There are currently limited recycling options for used AHPs.
The solution
Project Divert is developing a model for a new product stewardship scheme to pilot new technology to chemically decompose AHP waste and identify new waste management processes.
The project is bringing together key industry stakeholders and is expected to increase onshore AHP waste processing, create local employment and reduce landfill waste. The Australian Government is supporting the project with a grant of $561,031 through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
Recycling of used AHPs is expected to commence in mid to late 2022.
