Recycling child car seats thumbnail

The Australian Government is supporting Equilibrium OMG Pty Ltd to design and implement a product stewardship scheme for recycling old and unwanted child car safety seats.

The problem

Child car safety seats have a relatively short life span, with an estimated 200,000 child car seats disposed of every year. Up to 80% of child car safety seat components can be recycled, turning this waste into valuable new products.

The solution

SeatCare is an industry-led voluntary product stewardship scheme that is collecting and recycling car seats. About 25 collection sites are planned to open in mid-2022. This will eventually expand to 60 permanent sites and pop up events across metropolitan and regional areas by early 2023.

This project is supported by Kidsafe as well as brands and retailers such as Britax Childcare, Dorel Australia, InfaSecure, Nunababy, Baby Bunting, Kmart, Target and BigW.

SeatCare is being supported with a grant of $930,000 through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.

When

The first collection points for recycling child car seats are planned to open from late 2022.
