The Australian Government is supporting Dairy Australia to design a national product stewardship scheme for farm plastics.
The problem
It is estimated that 8,000 tonnes of waste farm plastics, such as dairy silage wraps and covers, is generated in Australia every year. There are currently limited options for the collection and recycling of these products.
The solution
This project is providing end-of-life solutions for farm plastics. The grant is funding Dairy Australia to research, design and implement a sustainable national product stewardship scheme for these recyclable materials.
This project is supporting the Australian dairy industry achieve its target of 100% of silage wrap being recycled by 2030. Suppliers, plastics re-processors, and dairy and cattle farmers are working together to ensure a practical and commercially viable stewardship scheme.
There are over ten partners in this project. The Australian Government is providing a grant of $965,400 for the project through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
This product stewardship project launched in January 2021.
