The Australian Government is supporting the Australian and New Zealand Recycling Platform to establish a stewardship scheme for used sporting equipment. This scheme will repurpose and recycle used sporting equipment, diverting it from landfill.
The problem
Over 1,000 tonnes of basketballs, tennis balls, racquets, and ski boards, boots and poles go to landfill each year. These materials are complex, compound items that require specialist processing to recycle.
The solution
The Sports Equipment Product Stewardship project provides collection and recycling of five common types of sporting equipment – tennis balls, tennis racquets, basketballs, snow skis and snow boots.
The project aims to open 220 collections sites around Australia to collect and recycle 55 tonnes of used sports equipment. Project partners include major sporting equipment retailers and organisations.
The Australian Government is providing a grant of $669,125 through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
This project will run until March 2023, with collection and recycling commencing in late 2021.
