The Australian Government is supporting the Australian Sporting Goods Association’s (ASGA) TreadLightly Initiative to provide free sports footwear collection and recycling.
The problem
Over 25 million pairs of sports shoes are imported into Australia annually and currently almost all of these are disposed of in landfill. Sports footwear is predominantly made from synthetic fabric, plastic and rubber which do not biodegrade.
The solution
The ASGA TreadLightly Initiative is an industry-led program that provides the Australian public with a free sports footwear collection and recycling service.
By establishing a national network of 500 collection sites the project aims to collect and recycle 1 million pairs of sports shoes every year that would otherwise be sent to landfill.
The Australian Government is providing a grant of $998,531 for the project through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
This project will run until January 2023 with collection and recycling of sports shoes commencing in mid-2021.
