The Australian Government is providing a grant to the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation Ltd (APCO) to develop a whole-of-supply chain scheme for oil containers.
The problem
Plastic oil containers cannot be recycled in kerbside recycling due to their residual oil. The oil residue in these containers is a health hazard and when disposed of in landfill can contaminate the surrounding environment.
The solution
APCO works to keep packaging materials out of landfill and retain the maximum value of the materials, energy and labour within the local economy.
This grant is funding ACPO to research, design and implement a sustainable national recycling scheme for used oil containers. It will deliver material flow, feasibility, cost benefit and market analyses, and models for governance, funding and free-rider protection.
The government is supporting APCO with a grant of $632,000 through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
This product stewardship project commenced in January 2021.
