The Australian Government Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities commissioned Sinclair Knight Merz to assess WasteDataFlow - the United Kingdom's web-based data collection system for municipal waste collected by local authorities.
The Summary of the history and development of WasteDataFlow documents data capture methodologies, datasets, data uses, system design, operational features, roles and responsibilities, costs, benefits and lessons learned. The report notes that, since the introduction of WasteDataFlow in 2004, quarterly statistics on municipal waste have been released within six months of the end of the reporting period, as opposed to 12·8 months under the previous manual survey-based system. The reports also notes that WasteDataFlow does not include information on commercial and industrial waste or construction and demolition waste that is not collected by local authorities.
The Summary of the history and development of WasteDataFlow report supports work under the National Waste Policy: Less Waste, More Resources, specifically Strategy 16 which requires the development of a system that provides online access to integrated national core data on waste and resource recovery.
