The Australian Government is supporting BioPak Pty Ltd to divert organic waste from landfill and turn it into nutrient-rich compost.
The problem
Around 900,000 tonnes of organic waste and 10 billion items of single-use packaging are disposed by the foodservice and hospitality sector every year. There is an opportunity to recycle a significant portion of this.
The solution
The Compost Network is an organic recycling initiative. It helps businesses to participate in a circular and regenerative system that diverts waste from landfill. The project aims to promote the use of compostable packaging and expand BioPak’s organic waste recycling program.
The Compost Network is allowing businesses to identify suppliers of certified compostable packaging and access sustainable end-of-life options (such as turning compostable packaging containing organic waste into nutrient-rich compost). The Australasian Bioplastics Association is a partner in this project. The Australian Government is providing a grant of $398,000 for the project through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
The Compost Network launched in February 2021.
