The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the Act) provides that the Minister may, by legislative instrument, amend the Live Import List by correcting an inaccuracy or updating the name of a species. In accordance with s303EC(1)(b) of the Act, the effect of this instrument is to update the names of 24 species of aquarium fish on Part 1 of the list.
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water recommends amending (as per section 303EC(1)(b)) the listings of the following species to correct the scientific and/or common names. All species are on Part 1 of the Live import List. Correct details for the specimens have been confirmed using the Catalogue of Life, FishBase and IUCN Red List websites.
- Andinoacara pulcher (Blue Acara) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Aequidens pulcher’. The correct scientific name is Andinoacara pulcher.
- Barbodes everetti (Clown Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius everetti’. The correct scientific name is Barbodes everetti.
- Barbodes lateristriga (Spanner Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius lateristriga’. The correct scientific name is Barbodes lateristriga.
- Barbodes semifasciolatus (Golden Barb, Chinese Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius semifasciolatus’. The correct scientific name is Barbodes semifasciolatus.
- Dawkinsia arulius (Longfin Barb, Arulius Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius arulius’. The correct scientific name is Dawkinsia arulius.
- Dawkinsia filamentosa (Black Spot Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius filamentosus’. The correct scientific name is Dawkinsia filamentosa.
- Desmopuntius hexazona (Tiger Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius hexazona’. The correct scientific name is Desmopuntius hexazona.
- Desmopuntius pentazona (Five-banded Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius pentazona’. The correct scientific name is Desmopuntius pentazona.
- Epalzeorhynchos kalopterum (Flying Fox) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus’. The correct scientific name is Epalzeorhynchos kalopterum.
- Haludaria fasciata (Melon Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius fasciata’ with the common name ‘Striped Barb’. The correct scientific name is Haludaria fasciata, and the accepted common name is Melon Barb.
- Laubuka laubuca (Indian Hatchet Fish) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Laubuca laubuca’. The correct scientific name is Laubuka laubuca.
- Leiognathus ruconius (Deep Pugnose Ponyfish) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Secutor ruconius’. The correct scientific name is Leiognathus ruconius.
- Lepidiolamprologus meeli (African Cichlid) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Neolamprologus meeli’. The correct scientific name is Lepidiolamprologus meeli.
- Oliotius oligolepis (Checkered Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius oligolepis’. The correct scientific name is Oliotius oligolepis.
- Pethia conchonius (Rosy Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius conchonius’. The correct scientific name is Pethia conchonius.
- Pethia cumingii (Cummings Barb, Two Spot Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius cumingii’. The correct scientific name is Pethia cumingii.
- Pethia nigrofasciata (Ruby Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius nigrofasciatus’. The correct scientific name is Pethia nigrofasciata.
- Pethia ticto (Ticto Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius ticto’. The correct scientific name is Pethia ticto.
- Puntigrus partipentazona (Tiger Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius partipentazona’. The correct scientific name is Puntigrus partipentazona.
- Puntigrus tetrazona (Tiger Barb, Sumatra Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius tetrazona’. The correct scientific name is Puntigrus tetrazona.
- Striuntius lineatus (Striped Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius lineatus’. The correct scientific name is ‘Striuntius lineatus’.
- Sturisomatichthys panamense (Armoured Catfish) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Sturisoma panamense’. The correct scientific name is ‘Sturisomatichthys panamense’.
- Systomus asoka (Asoka Barb) is currently listed with the scientific name ‘Puntius asoka’. The correct scientific name is Systomus asoka.
- Trichopodus trichopterus (Golden Gourami, Three Spot Gourami) is currently with the scientific name ‘Trichogaster trichopterus’. The correct scientific name is Trichopodus trichopterus.
How can I get involved
Comments are invited on the proposal to update the scientific names on the Live Import List. They are available for public comment for 30 business days, closing on Thursday 15 December 2022.
Any relevant information provided will be considered by the department prior to briefing the Minister.
