Code Review
On 30 July 2023, an independent review of the Code of Practice on the Humane Treatment of Wild and Farmed Australian Crocodiles (the Code) began to ensure the Australian crocodile farming industry continues to be managed to world class standards. The review is expected to take up to 12 months.
The review will consider whether the scope of the Code of Practice and the guidance contained is clear, scientifically informed, and appropriate for users.
Callida Consulting is leading the review and a panel of crocodile experts will be convened to help guide the review.
Consultation will be undertaken with key stakeholders to ensure the review is robust and fit for purpose.
The public will also be invited to provide feedback. Information on the public consultation process will be made available on this page shortly.
About this document
The code of practice on the humane treatment of wild and farmed Australian crocodiles outlines an achievable minimum standard of humane conduct in regard to the treatment of wild and farmed crocodiles. The code was endorsed by the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council on 21 May 2009.
Compliance with the code is a requirement of Wildlife Trade Management Plans for the commercial use (and export) of crocodiles, approved under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
