Governance and our partners

The Great Barrier Reef can be protected through collective and individual action. We have agreements that govern our, and our partners actions to protect the Reef. We will continue to work with our partners and strengthen partnerships for the future.

Great Barrier Reef Intergovernmental Agreement

The Agreement allows us to work together with the Queensland Government. It recognises that pressures on the Reef can't be solved alone. Together we co-fund and deliver many major programs. This provides a coordinated approach to protect the Reef.

Read more about the Intergovernmental Agreement.

Queensland Government (Office of the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage)

The Queensland Government works with the Australian Government and other partners to protect the Reef. This includes investing in, developing and managing initiatives to preserve the Reef.

The Queensland Government also manages the Reef protection regulations. These address land-based sources of water pollution flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (Reef Authority) is the Australian Government’s lead management agency for the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef Authority responsible for developing and implementing policies, plans, and programs to protect this unique natural wonder’s biodiversity.

The Reef Authority’s management is based on the best available science and knowledge. It is enhanced through partnerships with Traditional Owners, scientists, industries, government agencies and the community.

Together with natural resource managers, regulators, and educators, the Reef Authority has provided world-leading marine park management since 1975.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 guides the Reef Authority’s management of the Reef.

Australian Institute of Marine Science

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is the nation’s tropical marine research agency. AIMS is a world leader in tropical marine research.

AIMS undertakes research on Australia’s tropical marine estate. This includes research to help the Great Barrier Reef adapt to climate change.

AIMS manages the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program R&D Program. This includes research on heat tolerant coral and ways to keep the Reef cool.

For 36 years AIMS has surveyed the Reef through the Long-Term Monitoring Program. The Program provides the most comprehensive information source on the status of this ecosystem.

AIMS also manages the Great Barrier Reef Marine Monitoring Program. These programs help determine long-term trends in the condition of coral communities across the Reef.

Great Barrier Reef Foundation

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF) is a non-profit organisation established to help protect and preserve the Great Barrier Reef.

The Foundation works with partners to help regenerate, restore and build the Reef’s resilience. The Foundation raises funds and designs innovative, scalable conservation programs.

We work with the Foundation through the Reef Trust Partnership. The Partnership supports projects to address key threats for the Reef.
