About this study
The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority commissioned Deloitte Access Economics to undertake a study of the economic contribution of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area to the Australian economy.
This project is an update to a previous study undertaken by Access Economics on the economic contribution of the Great Barrier Reef in 2006/07. It provides information on the economic benefits of reef-dependent industries that may be used to inform decision making.
The study examines the economic contribution of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area for specified reef-dependent industries and activities, including tourism, recreation, commercial fishing and scientific research. It also provides a breakdown of the economic contribution by natural resource management region.
The study estimates that the value-added economic contribution of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area to the Australian economy in 2011-12 was $5.68 billion and it generated almost 69,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
