The comprehensive strategic assessment of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and adjacent coastal zone was the largest of its kind in the world.
The assessment has provided a big picture analysis of impacts on the reef and allowed us to plan for and manage existing and emerging risks. This will help ensure the ongoing protection and management of the reef.
The assessment was completed in two parts. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority conducted the assessment of the marine component of the area and the Queensland Government focused on management arrangements in the reef’s adjacent coastal zones.
Each massive body of work, conducted over two years, comprises a strategic assessment report and a programme report.
The outcomes of the assessments will inform the development and implementation of a 35-year sustainability plan for the iconic World Heritage-listed reef.
