About these documents
Australia is experiencing the impacts of a changing climate. To respond to this challenge, the department commissioned the CSIRO to prepare an updated climate vulnerability assessment of World Heritage properties in Australia and a climate change toolkit for World Heritage property managers. The assessment and toolkit update a previous report done in 2009.
The toolkit includes:
- a detailed handbook with a step-by-step approach to identifying, prioritising and planning for climate risks for a World Heritage property and includes case studies. The guidance in the handbook is provided to support property managers to understand and address the complexities of climate change and undertake adaptation planning.
- a workbook that can be used in planning workshops. It contains a quick reference guide as well as templates for each step of the approach.
The methods and guidance in the toolkit were tested and refined in collaboration with the department, World Heritage property managers and Traditional Owners across Australia.
Managers of other heritage places and protected areas may adapt this climate change toolkit by identifying values of the place and applying the most relevant climate projections for that region.
