A place to visit
The collection is centered on a number of themes offering visitors a fantastic introduction to Australia’s habitats and plant diversity. Plants are grouped by geographic origins ranging from the rainforests of the coast to the iconic landscapes of Australia’s Red Centre or with members of their botanical families. Some areas display Australia’s rare and endangered plants or are grouped for horticultural attributes suggesting ways to develop a garden at home.
Horticultural excellence
The Gardens' horticulturalists have the exciting challenge of caring for the diverse needs of our living collection while also ensuring the gardens are landscaped and maintained to be a beautiful place to visit. They apply their expertise to develop a knowledge-base for growing Australian plants, many not previously cultivated.
Our on-site nursery team can produce up to 40,000 plants per year. We grow hundreds of seedlings for use in the Gardens and glasshouses, research, and restoration projects in the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales regions.
Science and Conservation
Staff are actively involved in scientific research on Australian plants and their conservation through the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research and the National Seed Bank. The Gardens also cultivates plants that are threatened in the wild. This provides information and plant material for reintroduction to their natural habitat and helps protect them against extinction.
