Description
Volume 43 of the Flora of Australia introduces the Poaceae (Grasses). The grasses, with about 1300 species, are the third largest family of flowering plants in Australia, ranking behind the Myrtaceae (1858 spp.) and Fabaceae s. str. (1402 spp.), and ahead of Asteraceae (1221 spp.).
They are found throughout the country, in virtually all habitats, from the wettest to the driest, from sea-level to the tops of the highest ranges. In many parts of the country they form the dominant vegetation. This is particularly so in the hummock and tussock grasslands of eremaean regions, and the (now largely modified) grasslands and grassy woodlands of temperate regions.
Grasses also play an indispensable role in human economies. They provide the major cereals (wheat, barley, oats, rye, millet, sorghum, maize, rice), other crops (sugar) and a wide variety of pasture species that sustain animal husbandry. Other species are used in amenity roles, as lawns, playing fields, soil stabilisation and decorative plants. For the most part these economic functions are met by introduced species, although increasingly the value of native species are being recognised, particularly for pastoral use and the amelioration of salinity problems.
The Poaceae will be described in several volumes. This book provides an introduction to the family, identification keys, and an Atlas of the family in Australia. It is intended to stand alone as an overview of this important family, and to provide information on its phylogeny, classification, physiology, ecology, palaeohistory and economic value. It also provides an introduction to the species which will be described in detail in several parts of volume 44. A new tribe, Amphipogoneae, is described, as well as three other new taxa and several new combinations. As the latter will be published over several years, it is inevitable that knowledge will advance, and the recognised species and their distribution will change slightly. These minor changes will be flagged appropriately in the taxonomic texts.

Parallel to publication of this volume, ABRS has jointly published with the Queensland Herbarium an interactive key to Australian grasses, AusGrass. This will be complementary to the Flora of Australia, providing users with an alternative means of identification and additional illustrative material. This work was produced with the generous financial support of Bushcare, a program of the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust. Further information on these former programs, visit:
