Flora of Australia Supplementary Series 4:
Bibliographic Checklist of Non-marine Algae in Australia
cover
Descriptions and discussion of the many algae from fresh and brackish waters in Australia are widely scattered, and therefore difficult to access. Many species have been recorded from Australia as outlying records of overseas taxa. Others have been described as Australian endemics. In both cases, these initial judgments have often been shown to be mistaken, but until now there has been no overview of the taxa thought to occur in Australia, or of their distribution.
With work on the new ABRS handbook series Algae of Australia about to begin, there is an urgent need for a checklist of names which have been used previously for Australian non-marine algae, for an indication of their known distribution, for a bibliographic survey of usage of each name in the Australian phycological literature and an indication of synonymy, wherever this is available.
This book provides such a baseline study. It is compiled by Sandra Day and Rosemaree Wickham from the records of two of Australia’s leading freshwater phycologists, Tim Entwisle and Peter Tyler.
The Checklist will be invaluable to phycologists working on future treatments of Australian taxa for the Algae of Australia series, and for other research. Land and water resource managers will also have available for the first time an authoritative summary of current knowledge on Australia’s non-marine algae.
