Description

The thousands of visitors to the spring wildflower displays of the southwest of Western Australia can easily identify the plants that they see with this two-volume Flora of the South West: Bunbury–Augusta–Denmark by Judy Wheeler, Neville Marchant and Margaret Lewington. The books cover the flora of the wetter part of the south west (800–1000mm of rain per annum), containing a staggering 2 060 species in an area about 200km long and an average 50km wide.

Six identification keys, each based on a major flower colour, include  thumbnail sketches to confirm each couplet choice. The two volumes contain individual descriptions of the species, information about their distribution, conservation status and flowering times, and further sketches of their critical characteristics.

Because the area covered includes most of the major habitats of the broader south west (sandplains, Karri and Jarrah forest, Marri and Tuart woodlands, swamps and sedgelands), the books will be useful also in adjacent inland areas, and along the coast towards Albany. These attractively produced books are designed for use by enthusiastic amateurs, and can make future wildflower tours to this part of the country far more than an Ooh! Ahh! experience.
