ABBBS regional organisers

If you would like to get involved in bird banding, the first step is to contact the regional organiser (RO) in your state or territory. Regional organisers are experienced banders appointed by the ABBBS. They provide a point of contact between banders and the banding office. Regional organisers receive no remuneration and provide their time on a voluntary basis. Their duties include:

  • Liaising with the ABBBS, banders and the public on matters relating to banding
  • Providing advice to the ABBBS on policy and procedural matters
  • Promoting the image of banding as a scientific tool
  • Coordinating and assisting bander training through:
    • Selection, training and assessment of suitable supervisors/trainers
    • Placement of trainee banders with supervisors/trainers
    • Monitoring the effectiveness of training methods and resources.
  • Assisting in the recruitment of banders
  • Assisting with organisation of cooperative projects at the state and territory level
  • Liaising informally with state and territory wildlife agencies.

Regional Organisers can assist prospective banders by providing information about bird banding. They can also provide opportunities to gain first-hand banding experience. If an RO is not available to provide training, they may put you in contact with another senior bander in your area.

The ABBBS do not currently appoint regional organisers for bat banding. If you want to band bats, please contact the banding office. ABBBS staff can put you in touch with an experienced bat bander in your state or territory.
