Past trades

On 23 January 2023, the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder announced a tender to sell up to 8 gigalitres (GL) of Commonwealth environmental water from the Goulburn 1A Catchment in Victoria. The trade of annual water allocations is a result of the wet conditions over the last three years. The tender period will open at 10:00am (AEDT) Monday 30 January 2023 and close at 3:00pm (AEDT) Friday 3 February 2023. The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder has not appointed any brokers to act on its behalf in this water allocation sale. The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder is using a tender process, which is set out below.

‘Personal information' means information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable. The department will collect the personal information provided in the Sale of Water Allocation Bid Form (the bid form).

By completing and submitting the bid form, you consent to the collection of all personal information provided in the bid form.

We collect your personal information (as defined by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth)) for the purpose of processing and managing your water allocation bid and the transfer of water should your application be successful.

If you provide your consent in the bid form under ‘Follow-up Contact’, the department will also collect your personal information for the purpose of further research and assessment of water trading and the water trading process. This may include seeking further information or feedback from you.

If you provide your consent under ‘Commonwealth environmental water and trade updates’ the department will also collect your personal information for the purpose of contacting you with news and updates about Commonwealth environmental watering in the Murray-Darling Basin.

If you fail to provide some or all of the personal information requested in this form, the department may be unable to assess your application, facilitate the transfer of water to your account if your bid were to be successful or contact you about related matters.

The department may disclose your personal information to other Australian agencies, persons, or organisations where necessary for the above purposes, provided the disclosure is consistent with relevant laws, in particular the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Your personal information will be used and stored in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles.

The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder has completed its tender to sell 20,837 megalitres (ML) of Commonwealth environmental water from the Goulburn for a return of $6,043,618 for the Murray Darling environment. The volume weighted average price of the 78 successful bids was $290.04 per ML. The last trade was registered on 25 September 2018.

The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder has completed two (2) trades, resulting in the sale of 6,700 megalitres (ML) of Commonwealth environmental water in the Gwydir for a return of $2,878,400 for the Murray Darling environment. The volume weighted average price (VWAP)1 of successful bids was $429.61 per ML. The last trade was registered on 18 January 2018.

1 Volume weighted average price is the average price at which each ML was sold. To calculate VWAP, the total value of water traded ($) is divided by the total volume of water traded (ML).

The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder has completed 44 trades, resulting in the sale of 22,864 megalitres (ML) of Commonwealth environmental water in the southern Murray Darling Basin for a return of $6,457,669 for the Murray Darling environment. The last trade was registered on 18 November 2015.

The parcel volume ranged from 30 ML – 5111 ML, with a median trade volume of 200 ML and a volume weighted average bid price of $282/ML. Information on price and volume traded as part of this sale is provided in the link below. A summary of market activity is also provided.

Bidder survey

Following the completion of the trade, 48 bidders provided valuable feedback on how well the tender was run and what could be done to improve future trades of Commonwealth environmental water. The results of the bidder survey can be found below.

The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder has completed 7 trades, resulting in the sale of 340 megalitres (ML) of Commonwealth environmental water in the Peel for a return of $32,580 for the Murray Darling environment.

State Water approved the last trade on 10 April 2014. The parcel volume ranged from 20 ML – 150 ML, with a median volume of 30 ML and a volume weighted average bid price of $95.82/ML.
