How we manage water

Last updated: 09 July 2024

Managing Commonwealth water for the environment is complex. It depends on the supply of water and the demands of the environment.

Water for the environment

Water for the environment helps keep our rivers, wetlands and floodplains healthy.

Planning

We carefully plan how we'll use water for the environment and publish an annual Water Management Plan.

Managing water across the Basin

Our annual water management cycle helps us decide how to use water.

Science and monitoring

We draw on scientific and local knowledge to plan, manage, and monitor the use of water for the environment.

Water trading

Water trading is the process of buying, selling or exchanging water rights.
