Water planning – Border Rivers and Moonie Valleys

Last updated: 09 August 2024

Each year we plan how we will manage Commonwealth water for the environment. We carefully consider how we can use, trade and carryover water to get the best results.

Planning

Every year, we publish a Water Management Plan.

This plan outlines how we'll use water for the environment to support rivers and wetlands in the Basin. It considers how we'll do this under different climatic and water availability conditions.

The plan looks at:

  • expected water availability
  • the forecast for seasonal rainfall and temperature
  • plant, animal, river and wetland health.

It looks at these from both a valley-scale and Basin-scale perspective.

To learn more, visit our Latest water management plan page.

Water holdings

We hold the following entitlement types in the Border Rivers and Moonie Valleys region:

  • Queensland Border Rivers medium security (regulated entitlement held in Glenlyon Dam and Coolmunda dams)
  • Queensland Border Rivers unsupplemented (unregulated entitlements in the Queensland Macintyre, Dumaresq and Severn rivers and Macintyre Brook)
  • New South Wales Border Rivers supplementary (unregulated entitlements in the New South Wales Severn River)
  • New South Wales Border Rivers general security (regulated entitlement held in Pindari Dam)
  • Queensland Moonie unsupplemented
  • Queensland St George medium security.

Information about the different entitlements and water resource plans are available at:

  • NSW Department of Planning and Environment – Water
  • Queensland Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water.

For information about our current water holdings, visit Water holdings.
