Each year we plan how we will manage Commonwealth water for the environment. We carefully consider how we can use, trade and carryover water to get the best results.
Planning
Every year, we publish a Water Management Plan.
This plan outlines how we'll use water for the environment to support rivers and wetlands in the Basin. It considers how we'll do this under different climatic and water availability conditions.
The plan looks at:
- expected water availability
- the forecast for seasonal rainfall and temperature
- plant, animal, river and wetland health.
It looks at these from both a valley-scale and Basin-scale perspective.

Water holdings
We hold the following entitlement types in the Namoi Valley:
- Upper Namoi general security
- Lower Namoi general security
- Peel general security.
Information about the different entitlements and water resource plans are available at NSW Department of Planning and Environment – Water.
