The Victorian rivers have been impacted by 20 years of tough environmental conditions. There have been periods of long droughts and widespread flooding. We use Commonwealth water for the environment to improve the health of these rivers.
The latest achievements are below. To learn more about past water delivery, visit Past water use – Victorian rivers.
Supporting plants, flows, and fish
Each year, we deliver water to support our environmental objectives. These objectives include supporting native fish spawning and movement, encouraging riverbank vegetation health, maintaining water quality and providing habitat and food resources for native fish, platypus, turtles and macroinvertebrates (large invertebrates like dragon flies, mosquitos, insects, worms, crustaceans and snails).

Over the last decade, scientific monitoring in the Lower Goulburn River has shown that water for the environment has played an important role in achieving positive outcomes for the environment. These outcomes include:
- encouraging the health and establishment of riverbank and in-stream vegetation
- providing breeding opportunities, habitat, and food resources for native fish
- maintaining water quality to support native fish survival and health
- supporting macroinvertebrate population numbers and species diversity
