Internationally important wetlands
Australia currently has 67 Ramsar wetlands covering more than 8.3 million hectares.
Wetlands are listed under the Convention on Wetlands because of their international importance. Sites may be representative, rare or unique wetlands, or can be important for conserving biological diversity.

The Apsley Marshes Ramsar site covers the freshwater marshes at the mouth of the Apsley River, located on the east coast of Tasmania.

The Ashmore Reef Ramsar site is located in the north-eastern Indian Ocean on the edge of Australia's North West Shelf.

Banrock Station Wetland Complex is located on the Murray River floodplain immediately downstream of Kingston on Murray in the Riverland region, South Australia.

The Barmah Forest Ramsar site is located on the Murray River floodplain in north Victoria.

The Becher Point Wetlands Ramsar site is a system of about 60 small wetlands located near Rockingham in south-west Western Australia.

Blue Lake is found in the state of New South Wales within Kosciuszko National Park and is located approximately 3.5 km north-west of Charlottes Pass, the highest township in Australia.

The Bool and Hacks Lagoons Ramsar site, located near Naracoorte in south-east South Australia, is made up of the Bool Lagoon Game Reserve and the Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park.

Caryapundy Swamp Ramsar site is in north-western New South Wales, within the Narriearra Caryapundy Swamp National Park.

Cobourg Peninsula is located 200 kilometres north-east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The Cobourg Peninsula Ramsar site boundary follows the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park and covers all wetlands of Cobourg Peninsula and nearby islands.
