The Australian Heritage Council found the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is of outstanding national heritage significance as an integral part of the fabric of Melbourne and the nation. Since its establishment in 1853, the MCG has been associated with many of the finest sporting achievements of Australia, many of the world’s greatest athletes, and many of the significant "firsts" in the history of sport in Australia. In 1856 the first inter-colonial cricket match was arranged by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) and played on the MCG. Two years later members of the MCC devised the rules of the Melbourne Football Club, which became Australian Rules football, and the game was played on the MCG for the first time in 1859. The MCG was the venue for the first cricket test match between Australia and England (in 1877), and in 1956 it was the site of the Olympic Games, the first time the Olympics were held in the southern hemisphere.
