About this assessment

The Australian Heritage Council found Old Government House and the Government Domain in Parramatta of outstanding national heritage significance. Old Government House is the oldest surviving public building on the Australian mainland, and the only early colonial Government House to survive relatively intact. The Domain is an extensive cultural landscape with many links to the earliest settlement, such as the Crescent, the governor’s dairy, the bathhouse, memorials, carriageways and gatehouses, and the remains of Governor Brisbane’s observatory. The AHC found the place significant architecturally and socially, and for its links with Governors Phillip, Hunter, King, Macquarie and Brisbane, who all lived and worked at the house, and left their mark on the site.

The Council's final assessment report as given to the Minister is attached.

In some cases the Minister will have made amendments to such matters as boundaries, values and descriptions, before listing the place. For final listing data visit the Australian Heritage Database or the National Heritage Listing for Old Government House and the Government Domain.
