About the Plan
Christmas Island is a spectacular oceanic island that rises abruptly from the tropical waters of the eastern Indian Ocean. Its landscape is mostly covered with tropical rainforest and rugged limestone karst terrain.
Christmas Island National Park covers about 85 km2 (63%) of Christmas Island’s land area as well as an important adjacent marine area. The park provides habitat for endangered, vulnerable, threatened and migratory species. Its endemic species include seabirds and a diverse array of land crabs. Red crabs are a keystone species. They maintain the structure and species composition of the island’s rainforest vegetation. These crabs are internationally renowned for their annual breeding migration.
As a Commonwealth reserve, the Director of National Parks manages the park under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
The plan sets outs how the park and its natural and cultural values will be managed, protected and conserved for 10 years.
Reviewing and replacing the plan
The Director of National Parks invites your feedback on developing a new management plan for Christmas Island National Park.
The current plan expired on 31 March 2024. The new plan sets out the direction and management actions of Christmas Island National Park for the next 10 years.
