Consultation on the exposure draft Risk Assessment Guidance Manual

The consultation period for the exposure draft Risk Assessment Guidance Manual: for chemicals associated with coal seam gas closed on 28 February 2018. Documents remain available for reference only.

The Department sought comments on the exposure draft of the Risk Assessment Guidance Manual: for chemicals associated with coal seam gas extraction. The purpose of the Guidance Manual is to provide targeted methods for assessing the risks of chemicals used in coal seam gas operations in Australia and to provide a consistent and transparent approach to assessing risks associated with these chemicals.

Supporting documents

The exposure draft of the Risk Assessment Guidance Manual draws on methods developed as part of the National Assessment of Chemicals Associated with Coal Seam Gas Extraction in Australia as well as other national and international risk assessment methods. It is designed to complement existing national risk assessment and best practice guidance, including:

  • Environmental risk assessment guidance manual: For industrial chemicals
  • Environmental risk assessment guidance manual: For agricultural and veterinary chemicals
  • National Environment Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 2013
  • Environmental health risk assessment: Guidelines for assessing human health risks from environmental hazards
  • Australian and New Zealand guidelines for fresh and marine water quality 2000 (NWQMS Documents 4a and 4: Vols. 1, 2, and 3)
  • The national harmonised regulatory framework for natural gas from coal seams 2013
